Fence, gate and deck repairs

A leaning post or a soft deck board only gets worse with each season.

  • Leaning or broken fence posts, reset or replaced
  • Replacing pickets, boards and rails
  • Sagging gates, hinges and latches
  • Chain-link fence repairs
  • Deck boards, railings and stairs
  • Sanding and re-staining decks and fences

Our fence and deck work repairs what you already have. Building a new fence or deck isn’t part of it.

One leaning post, not a new fence

A single rotten or frost-heaved post can pull a whole section out of line. We dig it out, set a new post and re-attach the rails, so the rest of the fence stays.

If several posts have failed, you’ll know before we start.

Utility locates before we dig

Digging a post hole can hit buried gas, power or cable lines. A free utility locate from Ontario One Call, now the Ontario Dig Authority, marks them first.

Allow at least five business days for it. Private lines, such as power to a shed or gas to a BBQ, need a separate private locate.

Deck repairs

Loose railings, cracked boards and wobbly stairs are the usual deck repairs. We replace damaged boards, tighten or rebuild railings and fix stair treads.

Rebuilding a deck from the frame up is a different project. In Toronto, a deck more than 60 cm (24 in) above the ground needs a building permit.

Sanding and re-staining

Sun and rain turn bare wood grey and wear old stain thin. We sand the deck or fence, then put on a fresh coat of stain.

Repairs come first, so new boards and old ones take the stain together.

When to book

Heaved posts show up in spring, once the ground thaws. Summer and early fall suit deck repairs and staining, while the boards are dry.

Your questions, answered

Can you fix one leaning post without replacing the fence?

Usually, yes. We replace the failed post and re-attach the rails and boards around it. If the posts beside it are rotten too, we’ll show you before starting.

Do I need a utility locate before you dig?

Yes. Ontario One Call, now the Ontario Dig Authority, marks buried lines for free. Allow at least five business days, and book a private locate for lines like gas to a BBQ.

Should I repair or replace my deck?

If the frame and posts are sound, replacing boards, railings or stairs is usually enough. Soft joists or rotten posts point to a bigger rebuild. We’ll show you what we see before you decide.

Can you fix a gate that drags or won’t latch?

Yes. Most sagging gates need new hinges, a brace or a reset post. We adjust the latch so it catches without a push.

When is the best time to stain a deck?

Late spring through early fall, on dry, mild days. The wood needs to be dry before staining, and the stain needs time to set before rain. The stain’s label gives the exact temperatures and drying times.
